Equipment & Kit
One of the biggest concerns for DofE participants is the cost of specialist outdoor gear. At Leger Education Trust, we remove this barrier by providing all the essential "Group Kit" and offering a loan service for personal items.
1. What the Trust Provides (Free of Charge)
Every team is issued a comprehensive group kit bag before their expedition. This equipment is high-quality, safety-tested, and maintained by our DofE staff.
Tents: High-specification 2 and 3-man lightweight expedition tents.
Cooking Stoves: Trangia alcohol-burner stoves, including all pots, pans, and fuel bottles.
Navigation: OS 1:25,000 Explorer Maps and Silva compasses.
Safety: GPS Satellite Trackers, allowing our staff to monitor every group’s location in real-time for maximum safety.
Emergency Kit: Group first aid kits and emergency shelters (K-Way).
2. Personal Kit: What You Need
Students are responsible for their personal clothing and footwear. However, before you buy anything new, check our "Loan Store" below.
The "Big Three" Essentials:
Walking Boots: Must have ankle support and a gripped sole (moulded trainers or fashion boots are not permitted for safety reasons).
Waterproofs: A breathable waterproof jacket and over-trousers (essential for the unpredictable British weather!).
Rucksack: A 60–70 litre capacity bag with padded hip belts to distribute weight.
Other Items:
Sleeping Bag & Roll Mat: For a warm night's sleep.
Clothing: Layering is key. Synthetic, moisture-wicking fabrics (no jeans/denim as they stay heavy and cold when wet).
Food: High-energy, lightweight meals (pasta, porridge, boil-in-the-bag rations).
3. The Trust Loan Store (Access Without Limits)
We have a substantial store of equipment available for students to borrow if they do not own their own. This is part of our commitment to Access Without Limits.
Items available to borrow include:
Rucksacks (65L)
Waterproof jackets and trousers
Sleeping bags and liners
Sleeping mats (foam or self-inflating)
How to borrow: Students can request loan items during their weekly training sessions. We recommend requesting kit at least 4 weeks before your practice expedition to ensure availability.
4. Packing Guides & Video Tutorials
Packing a rucksack is a skill in itself! We teach students how to balance their load to prevent injury and keep kit dry.
Important Safety Note: Footwear
Footwear is the most important piece of kit. We strongly recommend "breaking in" walking boots by wearing them on short walks or even around the house in the months leading up to the expedition to prevent blisters.
